Over Grammys ShameGhanaian singer Wendy Shay believes winning a Grammy should not be the only factor determining a musician’s level of performance.
While Wendy Shay acknowledged the prestige that comes with receiving a Grammy, she emphasized the importance that goes beyond personal achievement to the transformative power of an artist’s compositions on the individual.
Wendy Shay, in an interview with Giovanni Caleb on TV3’s Showbiz 360, noted that some Ghanaians view the Grammys as a world championship and advised people to manage their expectations.
He highlighted the power of music and gave examples of legendary artists like Tupac and Bob Marley, who did not receive a Grammy, but still have a significant impact on the annals of music.“I think our Ghanaian brothers should be careful about their expectations when they hear something like this because they tend to see it as a World Cup.” In my opinion, music transcends all these things.
This is not to be understated: the Grammy is the most distinguished honor in music.“It’s nice to be recognized; we will all be happy if, God willing, we win one day,” he said in an interview with Giovanni Caleb aired on TV3’s Showbiz 360 programme. “But if it happens, it won’t necessarily be the end of the world.”
In my opinion, some legendary musicians who once graced the Earth, including Bob Marley and Tupac, have not received any Grammy Awards; therefore, it should not serve as a reference point.” Simply put, it should not serve as a criterion by which to judge a musician’s performance.
Because of its enormous power, music is the only nourishment for the psyche. “And achieving happiness for even one soul is the ultimate goal,” Wendy Shay said.Wendy Shay has spoken out against solely relying on the Grammy Awards as the benchmark for judging an artiste’s success among Ghanaians.
You pointed out that music serves a deeper function by inducing joy in the psyche. This speech followed the nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards, where Ghanaian artists were visibly absent despite the great impatience of their supporters.. .
Prominent artists such as Black Sherif and Stonebwoy, whose albums have received critical acclaim, were conspicuously omitted from the list of nominees. This failure has led to resentment and reflection on the support, promotion and recognition of the Ghanaian music sector.
